Student gangs keep up "quit China” call

SHANGHAI, Sunday.

EN thousand men and women students who besieged the British Consulate here over the week-end shouting anti-British and anti-American slogans were met by a more than adequate police force.

The Chinese Government, apparently embarrassed by Fri- day's violent outbreak at Canton, had ordered full protection for the Consulate

The grounds were ringed by police armed with Japanese-pattern rifles and light machine-guns. All British firms were guarded.

The demonstrators were dis- persed and the city has been quieter today.-News Chronicle Correspondent, B.U.P. and Reuter.
